Due to its ease of installation and cost-effectiveness, drywall is the most popular material in the country to form interior walls or partitions. Though it certainly has its benefits, drywall has its drawbacks, as well. When compared to materials like stone, brick, or wood, drywall is much more fragile. Impacts can make quite an impression on it, and other problems can occur as it ages. On the plus side, the job of repairing drywall is, thankfully, not as intensive or expensive as fixing these other materials.

Common Philadelphia Drywall Repairs
Probably the most frequent cause of drywall damage is due to impact. When something hits it hard (like the corner of a heavy table when moving or a fast flying remote control) drywall can dent. If it?s hit hard enough, you might even have a hole on your hands. Though brick or stone wouldn't sustain the same sort of damage, you also wouldn't be able to fix it quickly and economically.

If drywall is dented, you can fill the depression with spackle and level it off with a putty knife. Once it dries, you paint over it and the job is pretty much done. If there is a small hole, you can purchase a spackle kit that will come with directions on how to fix it, though the process is a little more involved and the technique is decidedly more difficult. Large holes are usually repaired by replacing part or all of the drywall with a new board that's cut to size.

Aside from impact related drywall repair, Philadelphia residents should be aware that water can damage it, as well. If drywall is often exposed to water, it can stain, and in severe cases, break down to the point where it is soft enough to poke through with your finger. As a moisture rich area that contains a lot of old structures, Philly homeowners should keep an eye out for any signs that water is leaking out of old piping behind walls or water that is coming in above ceilings from an aging roof.

Major Drywall Repairs in Philadelphia
Heavy snow and aging materials can easily compromise a roof, and gaps in old flooring materials can cause serious leaks, especially in a bathroom. The hallways and entrances of older homes might not be designed with swinging doors and fast moving doorknobs in mind, or even if they were designed with them in mind, space issues in older homes can certainly add to the likelihood of drywall getting damaged by impact. If your classic Philadelphia home has any of these issues, it might be a good idea to keep the tools you need around to repair minor damages. In many cases, however, these conditions can cause major problems over time.

Major drywall repairs are necessary when a significant portion of multiple boards becomes damaged by water or impact. Also, when wallpaper is hung improperly, removing it can mess up the surface of the drywall (and also remove the tape used to finish drywall) enough to require major repairs to make the surface useable again. Though it might seem like a job you can do yourself, this kind of work really is more difficult than it looks. When damage to drywall becomes so severe that you can't handle it yourself, it?s time to bring in the pros.

Prices of Philadelphia Drywall Repair
In Philadelphia, drywall repair starts at a couple hundred bucks for small jobs and gets up over $1,000 for truly major repairs. This is consistent with the national average costs of about $500. When you compare this cost to that of other home improvement jobs, the price is indeed nice, and the finished product is usually well worth the money spent. Repairs are usually completed in a few days or less, but, of course, bigger jobs take more time.
