There are many reasons why homeowners choose to install a new fence. The right fence can beautify your property, provide privacy or security, or simply mark your property line. Fences are also useful for households with pets or small children. The kind of fence you choose will usually depend on what you need it to do and how you want it to look. While some choices are better than others for specific situations, wood fencing has long been one of the most popular types among American homeowners.
Los Angeles Wood Fence Benefits
Though there are certainly quite a few options available for homeowners in Los Angeles, wood fencing is a perfect fit for many properties. They have a classic and appealing look, can be made to provide privacy, and do a great job of keeping pets and kids on your property and out of harm's way. Additionally, a Los Angeles wood fence is less likely to have some of the problems associated with wood fencing in other parts of the country.
Since L.A. weather is generally mild and annual precipitation levels in the area are relatively low, a wood fence in Los Angeles will generally have a longer life span and require less maintenance each year than the same fence in a different area. While moisture and trees go hand-in-hand, moisture and outdoor wood don't have near as friendly of a relationship. A wood fence in a very moist environment is likely to swell when moisture levels are high and contract when they are low. This leads to cracking and, if the fence is painted, peeling and chipping of the paint. Similar issues occur in areas where temperatures annually change between very cold and very warm.
Benefits of Cedar
Cedar is an excellent choice for outdoor wood. It is extra resistant to problems caused by bugs and the elements because of naturally occurring oils that are present in the wood. While some species of tropical hardwood, such as Ipe, are making names for themselves as being better suited for outdoor use than Cedar (and the hype is not unfounded), these species are often significantly more expensive than Cedar.
Los Angeles Wood Fencing Drawbacks
Probably the biggest drawback of a Los Angeles wood fence is that it falls short in the security department. When your needs go beyond keeping the dog in and turn to keeping people out, most wood fences can't compare to fencing made out of metal. Wood fencing is also a less appropriate material around pools, where vinyl is preferred. Also, no matter what kind of wood you construct your fence out of, it will require some maintenance over its lifetime. When compared to an aluminum or vinyl fence, the amount of time you'll need to spend to keep your fence up to par will be far higher.
Los Angeles Wood Fence Pricing
Prices for wood fencing vary greatly depending on the size of the fence. In Los Angeles, wood fencing can cost as little as $1,000 or $2,000 or as much as $6,000 or $7,000 to purchase and install. As a rule, wood fencing is less expensive than vinyl fencing, and always far cheaper than wrought iron. It can be more expensive than some aluminum fencing, particularly chain-link, but the difference in appearance is often large enough that the two aren't really considered interchangeable.
