I also when I have my dryer out I take a dust wand and clean up all the lint on the back and floor up. And in the front where the lint tray is i clean out the inside with my dust want and vacuum . I do this 2x's a year when we have to change the clocks as we do the smoke alarms the same time. Margie D. Hopedale, Ma 01747

Dave/David -- Thanks for making a video that realistically tells people of the need to beyond "cleaning the filter. This was/is a VERY GOOD pointer for many (perhaps most?) people.

I'd like to offer a little bit of constructive criticism to an otherwise short and VERY important problem area you highlighted, First, when you showed the connection from the dryer exhaust -- it was flexible metallic tubing (from the dryer exhaust to the outdoor vent. But even though many State and Municipal Codes allow it -- it is not the best choice. A much better alternative is to replace that with solid metal ducting. Although your example showed a very short run -- this tubing has many of the disadvantages of the older and plastic tubing -- which in most locations is no longer legal.

The flexible metal is much safer than the white plastic tubing used in the past -- and much less flammable as you know.....But flexible duct vent that contains dust should really not be used...

Another issue that gets deeper into cleaning and for many people is best left to a professional: It is VERY important to get INSIDE the dryer's motor and exhaust areas before it ever gets to the vent, Particularly with gas dryers -- and one excellent brand that needs cleaning from the inside out is Whirlpool. Don't know why, but many of their dryers over the last 15(+/-) years do not expel the dust as well as they should. Upon removing the back panel -- and the vent duct (inside the dryer) -- it is VERY important to vacuum this all out. So-called "shop vacs are very handy here - but any good vacuum with a flexible hose will do the job.

I'd suggest adding these to your next revision.

Thank you very much,

/Dave Gallagher

Don't forget to wash the lint screen also. I use a mild dish soap a couple of times a year and it helps keep the dryer venting better as well.

Trishia N Tower MN

Once a month I remove the screen to the dryer vent and vacuum the pieces of lint that get by the screen.........something ALWAYS gets by the screen.

Yes one thing don't let anyone [kids] pile up there clothes around or in front of the dryer as it blocks the airflow which could cause less air which means more heat more cause for fire and dryer failure thank you

The only thing I would like to stress is your Dryer Vent ,there were over 12,000 fires last year due to plugged D.V and or dryers themselves lint build up in rear of dryer is worse than vent ,because nobody cleans them.

David Lupberger on How to Keep Your Dryer Working Its Best: Hi, I'm David Lupberger with ServiceMagic.com. Today we are going to talk about the importance of cleaning your dryer vent. Now for most people, the extent of there dryer cleaning is they go and take out that screen and they pull out that lint. Now that's really about all that they do. But I've got to tell you there is a couple of other things that I recommend you check.
Lupberger: If you find that your dryer is not running efficiently. Or that it's taking longer and longer to dry it could be the connection behind the dryer that's not clear or the exterior vent. Let's go look. As you can see we have pulled the dryer away from the wall in this next step we are going to check the connection of this vent line to both the dryer and the exterior vent. If this is loose on either side then both lint and hot air is escaping into the room where the dryer is housed.
Lupberger: Now the last part in this process is to check the exterior vent. So the dryer through that vent line is connected to this exterior vent and what you want to do; there is usually a little cover, is reach in and make sure there is nothing obstructing that vent line.
Lupberger: Another good reason to clean the lint from your dryers it can be a source of house fires. Number one; clean you're dryer regularly. Number two; don't run your dryer when you are not home. So make sure this is clean the connection to your exterior vent is clean and your screen is clean. If your dryer still isn't running efficiently, it's time to call a repair person.
