Comment: I purchased a townhouse in DC about a year and a half ago. The home was built in 1911, but was fully-gutted and renovated in 1979. Approximately 6 months after I moved in, I noticed some cracking in my bedroom and adjoining bathroom (on the same wall). The cracks are perfectly vertical and horizontal, which makes me think it is separating along the edges of the sheet rock, on a wall that extends from the house's sidewall along the joist. At their widest, the cracks are 1/4 inch wide. I do know that there was a problem with the toilet shortly before I purchased the house and they had some flooding and replaced the floor in my bathroom. My concern is that they cut into the joist as part of the repairs, weakening the structure of my home. The cracks have been somewhat stable for the past 6 months, but I was hoping to have somebody evaluate my suspicions and ensure that the structure has not been compromised.
