Comment: I have a 20'w X 21'd garage my ceiling joists are 2 X 8's on 16" centers. If it would be possible I would like to create living space above the garage without using a beam. My idea is to sister each 2x8 to acheive the stability neccessary. Would 2x8's sistered (glued and screwed) be sufficient to make my ceiling load bearing capable? Maybe even with steel sandwiched between?
