About This Gallery
Real People, Real Projects Custom Brick and Stone Home After Mrs. Myers gave her husband the gift of a few hours with an architect, the Myers began to realize their dream of owning a custom home. They had a few items they knew were important to them, like the master bathroom, huge windows to enjoy their view, a custom fireplace, and granite in the kitchen.
The Setting The Myers Family lives on 55 acres in rural Oklahoma, so space was never an issue. But they did want to make the most of their space. A small creek, lined on both sides with pecan trees, runs just behind their home, and they wanted the back of the home to have expansive views of this idyllic setting.
Their architect pulled together a plan that was full of texture and angles while maintaining delicate symmetry with the country. The exterior is a combination of salvaged brick and limestone, with flat stucco filling in the peaks. Ridge vents were used on the roof because they didn't want any openings or protrusions on the roof. The effect is a smooth, continuous roof.
The Interior On the inside, they created a place to fit all of their needs. They both play the piano and needed a place for their antique piano in the great room. They also are both avid readers and wanted a library to store their books, not to mention a quiet place to read.
Mrs. Myers is a caterer by trade and so the kitchen is top notch: mahogany hardwood floors, 6-burner Viking Stove, two dishwashers, custom oak cabinets, and granite counters. This kitchen is big enough to entertain a large group, but small enough for close conversation. The kitchen flows into a conversation pit below the stairs and then into their breakfast nook that overlooks the creek.
The Function Since their kids are all grown (and thrilled this home was built after they moved away, I'm sure), The Myers wanted to be able to close down the guest section of the house. Their home is 3500 square feet and they saw no need to heat and cool a section that was not being used. To help with the heating, they have a custom fireplace, stretching 17-feet high that helps warm the house during the colder months.
They also needed a master suite if they were going to keep themselves on one side of the house, complete with a Jacuzzi tub and a walk-in closet.
Their Story The Myers Family had been talking about building their own home for twenty years, but the true catalyst was the present of a few hours with an architect. Once they could see their ideas as actual plans for their dreams, this home truly started to come together.
