KITCHENS: Chuck & Christy's Kitchen

Real People, Real Projects
Their Story Chuck and Christy C. bought their home in Indianapolis a little over 7 years ago. Back then it was a cozy, English-style Tudor home: 3 bed, 1 bath, breakfast nook, the whole nine. Built in 1935, their home had all the charm and character of a couple's first home, with weathered brick that hinted at the beauty and strength of a home built to stand the test of time. It was more than enough for the happy couple.
Then the children came. Their first two girls arrived almost overnight, and they quickly found themselves in a charming cottage that barely had enough room for the family, let alone, toys, clothes, and room to play. They needed more space, but didn't want to comprise leaving the house and the neighborhood they and their children had come to call home.
Construction Begins In April of last year they called in a local contractor, a neighborhood favorite, and began demolition. The first and biggest task with the demo was a large tree in their back yard. They wanted to build out and up, and if they were going to do that, the tree needed to be taken down. Also in their path was a detached garage. They had the new garage attached and built a master suite on top of it, complete with a master bathroom that was separate from their children's bathroom (a feature that cannot be given too much praise).
There were also some other ostensibly less-glamorous items. They needed a new HVAC system that would provide heat and air to their new addition. They had to choose a new roofing tile that would match the style of their old slate roof, and they have had dozens of people stop by and complement them just on their roof. Finally, all the odds and ends of the project that needed the homeowners' touch: finding a brick design to match the new addition with the old structure, deciding on paint colors, determining which windows would be closed-in for wall space, and scads of other items.
A Kitchen Makeover for the Remodeling Hungry But Christy and Chuck weren't done. Not only were they still hungry to remodel their kitchen, but also Christy was then pregnant with their third child. This didn't slow them down a step. They remodeled their kitchen in granite counters and solid wood cabinets. Their original intention was to have a granite island and solid surface for the rest of the counters because they liked the look and utility of a seamless sink. However, once the granite was installed, they didn't think the solid surface would go well with the sparkle of their granite pattern. So they opted to do granite throughout.
All told, the whole process ran from April to October, 3 1/2 months of which they didn't have a kitchen. But that didn't bother this family. They turned their dining room into a makeshift kitchen, took several, much-needed vacations, and, according to Chuck, "ate a lot of cereal." All worth it, they say. Just look at the home we have now.
