Q: When should I fertilize my lawn?
A: The first application should be done by May 5th and should include a crabgrass preventer, since crabgrass germinates at 55 degrees. If you have sandy soil, 3-4 applications a year is ideal and for clay soils 2-3 times per year is sufficient, since clay holds its nutrients longer. Use a fertilizer with higher concentrations of Nitrogen in the spring to promote leaf growth. A slow release Nitrogen is best as it reduces the risk of burning your lawn and stays in the soil longer. Use a higher phosphorus (P) content in the fall to promote root growth and to store energy for winter.
Q: How often should I water my lawn?
A: It all depends on your soil type. Soils with high clay content need 2-3 heavy (40-60min) waterings per week. Sandy soils require less time (15-25min) but more frequent waterings, 3-4 per week. Overwatering causes leaching of nutrients. Watch your local weather reports and adjust your watering schedule accordingly.
Q: Is it necessary to aerate my lawn?
A: Most lawns need to be aerated once every five years. The best time to aerate is mid-August to early September. It is a good idea to mark your valve boxes, (small green boxes in the lawn),and your sprinkler heads first. You can get flags at Knox or Menard’s or we can mark them at winterization for a small fee. Aeration helps break down the layer of thatch that builds up from dead and decaying matter, which deprives the roots of needed oxygen. However, a healthy lawn will have plenty of worms and microorganisms which break down the thatch much better than a machine. The drawback of having several liquid herbicide applications is that it kills off these beneficial organisms.

Most sprinkler installations run between 2-3000 depending on water pressure and landscape design
