How to Select the Right Window and Siding Professional Ten Questions to Ask Contractors Before You Invite Them Out to Your Home: 1- How long have they been in business? You should look for a company with an established business history. 2- Are they located within a reasonable distance from your home? In the event you would need service you don't want to deal with someone that is a hundred miles away. 3- Do they have insurance? The company you choose should have the proper insurance to protect you and your family. 4- Does the contractor belong to any business associations? Ask if the organization helps to guard you against complaints concerning unscrupulous contractors. 5- Is the contractor a National Chain Contractor? They're the ones that run the expensive "info-mercials" on TV.  These contractors often subcontract their work and since the installation is not managed or controlled by the company standards of quality can range from job to job. 6- Are these people for real? "Jack-Legs" are door to door solicitors.  They may not be contractors at all.  Never allow them into your home until you've checked them out. 7- Can they provide you with written references? Your contractor should be glad to supply you with references.  Find out what percentage of their business is referral or repeat business. 8- Should I go with the lowest price I am quoted? We all want to avoid overpriced high-pressure retailers like the plague, but, does that mean it is OK to choose your contractor by the lowest price alone?  NO!  This could be a BIG MISTAKE!  Here's why:  We've all heard the old adage "you get what you pay for".  On a low estimate you must ask yourself - "what is being left out or what shortcut is being taken?" 9- Is there a written warranty? Many contractors will tell you that their job comes with a "Lifetime Warranty", but be careful!  What they mean is the manufacturer will guarantee the product against certain manufacturing defects.  Ask if your contractor will provide you with a labor warranty and for how long. 10- How does your contractor handle your "dirty work"? Nothing can be more frustrating than a contractor that has no respect for your property.  Your contractor should clean up the debris at the end of each day and leave the premises in an orderly manner at the completion of the job.
