Floyd was very nice to come out of his way (ie. 45+ minute drive) to inspect our gas burning furnace. He gave a very indepth diagnosis of the problem and a viable solution. Highly Recommend Floyd.

Project: Repair a Pre-Fabricated Fireplace Unit (Gas)
My fireplace works. I learned from the repairman a couple of things including that I could use batteries in it to start it when the power is off and also that many fireplace repair places do not work on Heatalators and he told me that Fireside, corp. in Kent or Auburn (I forgot) does work on them and can also provide new parts for them. This knowledge can help me in the future if it stops working. I wish I had done more research when building the house and I would have had a different kind of fireplace installed. The one I have doesn't provide much heat, lets in a lot of cold air, and is mostly just for looks. A waste of money I think.

First, I must say I am not in favor of a "trip charge", it costs that much extra to just get started. These pros don't need a brick and mortar store or retail space or staff, just a vehicle, and the trip should be part of the cost of doing business. I was not aware of the charge when I asked him to come for an estimate. He did an ok job but $140 later, I got a new gas valve and the fan still doesn't work. Doing the math, at his rate, 4 jobs per day at 2 hours each nets him $520 per day. Final analysis, I should have tackled the job myself, wasn't worth it, but the $40 trip fee kind of sticks you doesn't it?
Comment from Floyd's HVAC
when you cant get gas to your fireplace it wont run. most inserts have thermo switches and a rheostat in them the fan wont run till the unit is hot. if you ask me to get your unit runing i will. but the fan takes 10 to 20 min of heet to run. yes he did ask for the charges before the sevice call and again before he left for work so he was well aware of the 125. and tax. please people you would like to be treated honestly so do the same for us. trip is for gas, time, wear on the truck. labor is for overhead and wages if you live 100mi away you pay more then a man like this that live 20 miles each way. and if you live closer you pay less.
