Find Prescreened Professionals

Since carpet can go about anywhere in your home, the contractor you hired to install or clean the carpet could be anywhere as well, and each room comes with its own inconveniences. Since kitchens are often covered in different materials (hardwood or tile), you will usually have access to them throughout the contractors stay and therefore won't have to worry about preparing food beforehand. If a living quarter, such as a bedroom or family room, is being carpeted or cleaned, the inconvenience is small, but if you have kids you may have to find other options to entertain them besides the TV and naptime. Also, if carpet is being installed or cleaned in your bathroom, you may have to find a temporary alternative such as a neighbor's house or a public place.

Though carpet installation may be a temporary hassle to your home, carpet contractors have to live with these burdens every day. They are in homes all the time dealing with these same disturbances, so here are some things you can do to make their lives a little easier.

Provide a Restroom: If the installation is occurring in other parts of the house, allow the carpet contractors to use the bathroom. You may need to put down drop cloths or mats along this path so they don't dirty your other flooring, but it will actually cut down on the installation and cleaning time since they won't have waste their time finding a bathroom elsewhere.

Provide Provisions: Any type of construction is hard work, even the interior installations. So offer your carpet contractors some water, lemonade, or coffee to make the worksite a bit more relaxed. Though you didn't agree to feed them, and though contractors are always prepared to find food somewhere else, when lunchtime comes around it never hurts to offer simple things, such as sandwiches, pizza, or small snacks.

Provide Ventilation: During the carpet installation, adhesive may be used and that nice new carpet smell may become overwhelming. Therefore, open a window, turn on a fan, or temporarily crank up your HVAC system so that ventilation can be provided to you, the contractors, and the flooring itself.

Give Them a Break: Though carpet contractors have it a bit easier than other construction workers because all their projects are inside and it doesn't create as much of a mess, they still have specific hardships to deal with. They are on their hand and knees all day, stretching, and measuring, and nailing. Plus, if other homeowners don't follow the prep steps on our website, the contractors may have to help lug heavy furniture out of rooms all day, making their job doubly difficult. Therefore, they may take several breaks to relax and stretch aching muscles. It doesn't mean they're not working hard, so let them do what they have to in order for the worksite to be more comfortable. The more at-ease you are with them, the happier the workers will be; so that in the end, the overall project benefits and a better final product is ensured.

Overall, Keep Things Pleasant
You didn't hire a carpet contractor to make new friends, but that doesn't mean that they aren't guests in your home. Some people mistake trained professionals for cheap hired help and this attitude can hurt the project in terms of installation time, cost, and frustration on both sides. The best thing you can do to help out the carpet contractors is stay out of their way; don't hover and inspect as the job is being performed. If there are any problems, the professionals will come to you as long as you're open to it. In any event, keep lines of communication open, and don't place an undue strain on them. If you find a nice balance in communication, the job will go mush quicker. Plus, if a problem does occur, the contractors may even cut you a few breaks as well due to your responsiveness.
