Find Top-Rated Professionals

Basement contractors are usually hired to enhance your home. Other contractors are often in your house to not necessarily enhance, but to correct problems or perform maintenance. Basement contractors are almost always there to make your living space bigger or better. So these contractors are almost never around for a grudge purchase.

Basement contractors will need very little ground level working space from you. You will not have to rearrange your home for them, as they will be working below ground. It is important to move anything that will be in their way coming or going, but this is a small thing. Basement remodels typically have an enormous return on investment, so you have to look at their work as money made at closing.

Basement Contractor Etiquette
There are no laws that say you have to let any professional use your facilities, but it is common etiquette that if someone is working in your home, that you allow them to use your bathroom. Offering this up could mean a great deal to someone who has been asked to go down to the local convenience store before by other clients.

It is not necessary that you offer beverages to your basement contractor, or towels, rags, trash bags, tools or anything. You hired them on the idea that they would come with everything the need, and that all you had to do was pay. While this is to the letter of your agreement, this probably isn't how you want to approach any relationship, let alone a service relationship. Basement contractors are working hard, working hard for you, and offering a glass of water or use of your facilities is not that difficult. Plus it just might be what convinces them to lower the price on something, finish their job quicker than usual, or make any changes that you want without complaint. Being easy to get along with, receptive, and respectful is never a bad idea.

Ideas for Working with Basement Contractors
Plan ahead. If they will be hanging sheetrock, installing new flooring, or painting, have a mat where they can wipe their feet when they walk up the stairs and out through the house.

Have some old T-shirts or towels they can use to wipe their hands so that nothing is accidentally smudged on furniture or walls.

If basement contractors will be particularly dusty, as in after sanding drywall, buy some carpet pieces from a local store and lay them in a path to the door. This will keep your floor a little cleaner than normal and help lessen the amount of cleaning that needs to be done once they leave.

Allow them access to water cups, a place outside where they can wash things off, electrical sources outside of the immediate area where they are working, and any other thing you can predict that someone in their position might need.

If you want to be a super client, having donuts or coffee or bagels ready in the morning will make you look like a champion to most basement contractors. Making a few sandwiches or ordering a pizza when you are around is a excellent gesture that will most likely be met with basement professionals falling all over themselves to make certain your basement is even better than you planned.
