Is your house missing some aesthetic appeal and you can't quite put your finger on it? More than likely it's because your home blends in with most other homes in the neighborhood. One simple solution to standout from your next door neighbor is to install paving stones.

Paving stones are stones that are laid in sand to create patios, driveways, courtyards, walkways, decking, garden walls, and many other features to set your home apart. They also come in various shapes, sizes, patterns, colors, and textures, such as:

  • Limestone
  • Sandstone
  • Bluestone
  • Slate
  • Brick
  • Granite
  • Concrete

    Advantages
The major benefits of the paving stone are its strength, durability, and aesthetic appeal. Not only is the paving stone stronger than concrete, but it can withstand large amounts of traffic as well as constant and extreme temperature changes and should any stone become damaged, it can be easily replaced.

Another major advantage of the paving stone is that it is water resistant and forces water to drain into the sand-filled joints. The sand-filled joints help lock the stones in place and add sturdiness while maintaining its visual appeal and flexibility, which are key factors as to why its popularity is growing amongst homeowners.

An additional key benefit the paving stone brings to the table is its immediate impact on visual appeal and its ease of installation. But because paving stones don't require mortar to install, it doesn't mean they don't require a little bit of work. Some homeowners choose to install them on their own, while other homeowners choose to hire a paver or contractor.

    Can You Do It?
Which is the best option? It depends. Do you know exactly what you want or do you simply have an idea? These are just a couple of the questions you may ask yourself when determining just who is going to design the pattern or install the stones. Paving stones definitely require advanced planning.

You will also need to know the area and dimensions of the working space, the stone type, the cost limits, the expected timeframe, and how different types of stones affect the visual appeal of the yard and home. Knowing these things will require additional research and could give the average homeowner a headache if they're not fully prepared to do the necessary research or spend the proper amount of time in preparing for the project. Plus, sometimes it just gets tiresome lifting stone after stone, which is why, before you go it alone, you should at least contact a contractor for their assessment and estimate.

The contractor may be able to offer advice in regard to ideas you might not have thought of or suggestions about types of stones you may want to avoid. All in all, it can't hurt to bring in a professional for some advice to determine if the scope or the price of the project is within your range for a hired hand or if you need to prepare for a do-it-yourself job.
