Tin ceilings are a popular ceiling solution for a multitude of reasons. Made to mimic the tin ceiling panels that were popular at the end of the 19th century, modern materials are lightweight, durable and very attractive when installed correctly. Add to that the touch of class and originality that they lend to any living area and it's clear why many homeowners are choosing tin ceiling tile over sheetrock and other ceiling materials.

They Don't Make It Like They Used To
The truth of the matter is that most modern manufacturers don't make tin tiles out of tin anymore. Instead, most present day "tin" ceiling tiles are now made of pressed aluminum, making them more lightweight and corrosion-resistant than their predecessors, without sacrificing the stunning good looks that people rightly associate with this building material. The shift to aluminum has had numerous beneficial results for the tin tile industry.

Factors. For starters, aluminum is a cheaper metal to obtain, and thus the overall cost of tin panels has been greatly reduced by making the shift. Add to that the fact that aluminum tiles absorb sound, resist moisture, provide an excellent firewall barrier, and last longer than plaster and drywall, it's an understatement to say that the shift to aluminum has been a blessing for both the industry and homeowners who choose to have them installed.

Looking for a Little Something Extra?
Of course, as with almost any building material, those willing to fork over a little more cash can receive stunning results. "Tin" ceiling tiles are also available in stainless steel and copper. These metals are heavier than aluminum and quite a bit stronger, although this really isn't a concern when it comes to ceilings, unless you've got a teenager that likes to hit pop-flies in the living room when the folks aren't home. That being the case, the reason some owners opt to pay a little bit extra for these tiles is more aesthetic than anything. A well installed, polished copper ceiling stops people in their tracks the first time they see it, and is something any homeowner will enjoy years after installation.

Other Possibilities
Tin ceilings are also popular because they offer so many options when it comes to appearance. You can leave the aluminum in it's original state (a look that so closely mimics tin itself that almost nobody will be able to tell the difference); you can purchase copper or silver plated varieties for a little extra shine; or textured tin panels can be painted to create a raised plaster look that was very popular when tin ceilings first gained public acclaim as a building material over a hundred years ago. Painting tin ceiling tiles is relatively easy as well, since they are usually painted prior to installation.

Talk to a Professional
If you're considering tin ceilings for your home or business, talk to a tin ceiling supplier or other contractor to get a good idea of prices, availability and options before you purchase. An experienced installer can not only advise you on which style and look is best for you, but will be a much appreciated resource when it comes to actually installing a new, stunning ceiling in your home.
