Trees are wonderful assets to a property. They provide shade, add beauty, and in some cases, trees can even add value to your home. Unfortunately, when they are sick, damaged, or their roots become intrusive, trees can also be a liability. There are several situations that can make a tree on your property unsightly (or even dangerous), but there are also several solutions available that can often bring your tree's status back from detrimental to beneficial. In some cases, tree removal services are your only option; however, for the sake of your property's value and appearance, it is worth the time it takes to consider all your options before having a tree cut down!
Tree Storm Damage
Lightning, high winds, and heavy snow and ice can bring damage to even the most sturdy tree. Storm damage is unique in that it happens quickly, and often without warning. Unlike other threats to your tree, storm damage is difficult to prevent, as we have little control over the elements. However, tree storm damage is preventable to appoint with regular trimmings and check-ups.
When dealing with newly planted trees, storm damage is typically not as much of an issue. Since smaller trees are very flexible, they can generally spring back from the weight of snow and ice; since they are not tall, they are unlikely to attract lightning. However, high winds can sometimes pose a threat to small trees (especially if they are newly transplanted and haven't had the chance to firmly establish a root system). When introducing a new tree to your property, it is always advisable to give it a little more support. Tying the trunk loosely to a single, solid stake might do the trick, but many suggest that four small stakes attached to the trunk by longer lengths of cord (much like the stakes and cords that hold up the center pole in a circus tent) present a better method.
When dealing with a larger tree, storm damage is far more likely. While you can't do much about lightning, trimming unstable branches every few years is a good step in reducing damage from heavy snow, ice, and high winds. Trimming large trees won't only prevent damage to the tree, but to any vehicles or structures around it.
Tree Removal Service
When disease, storm damage, or impact have caused irreparable damage or you find that plumbing or foundation problems are the direct result of your tree, removal services are often the only way to ensure the safety of your property. Calling a tree removal company is a last resort, but even though you're losing a beautiful part of your property, don't let that cloud your common sense. Not every tree removal service company is going to charge the same amount for the job, so (just as you would with a kitchen remodel or deck installation) make sure you talk to and get estimates from several companies before you decide who to hire.
One thing to be very aware of when interviewing tree removal companies is what they plan on doing with the stump. Some tree service companies will include stump removal in the cost of tree removal; others charge extra for stump removal. Depending on your situation, one or the other might be a better investment. For example, if you are removing a tree in an out of the way area, the presence of a stump might not be a big deal; here, you might opt to hire a company that won't include stump removal in the tree removal price. On the other hand, when removing a large tree from the center of your front lawn, most homeowners will not only want the stump gone, but the ground leveled and/or new grass planted. No matter what your situation, getting the best price for the project in its entirety is likely to involve a few discussions about stump removal prices. Don't forget to ask them: Your wallet will thank you!
