A kitchenette is a kitchen in miniature, containing all the basics of their larger cousins. A sink, stove range, mini-fridge and a few cabinets are the standard fare, though there are a wide range of options to choose from if you're looking for one of these space saving, cost-effective additions or remodels to your home.

Reasons for Scaling Down
There are many reasons for installing one of these compact kitchens. The most obvious is if you're living in a small apartment, condominium, townhouse or small home. You can have all the amenities of a larger kitchen without swallowing up valuable square footage. Of course, there are other places where these models are a great addition. Mother-in-law quarters, above garage apartments and even basement remodels are all excellent places to add an extra kitchen area in your home. Kitchenettes are also great additions for the disabled, since the close proximity of the appliances and storage areas makes for easier use for those with limited mobility or who are in a wheelchair.

Kitchenette Options
As mentioned before, a fridge, sink, range and cabinets make up the most basic models, but that doesn't mean that's all you have to choose from. The most important thing to keep in mind as you begin shopping is how much space you have to work with. For those with a little more room, ovens, microwaves, half-refrigerators, counter space and ample cabinetry are all definite possibilities. For those in more cramped quarters, scaling down to a sink, mini-fridge, microwave and a few small cabinets might be all you've got room for. Advancing technology has transformed the kitchenette as well. Microwaves have replaced electric ranges on many models, and new combination microwave, convection and traditional ovens (a.k.a. trivection ovens) are beginning to make headway and give homeowners all the cooking power they need in one all-purpose appliance.

Custom Kitchenettes
There are ready-made models on the market available for purchase that make choosing and installing these miniature kitchens practical and economical. If you can afford it, however, find a contractor willing to build a custom, built-to-fit version for your home. The goal of purchasing a kitchenette is saving space, and the best way to do that while maximizing the efficiency of the space you do have is to have one custom built to match the room available. It also means a nicer finished product, as you'll have a wider range of higher quality materials to choose from, from the appliances on up to cabinetry and countertop material.

If you're pressed for space, or just looking for the convenience of a smaller, more compact kitchen area, these miniature kitchens are the answer for you. Talk to a contractor about adding one of these to your home.
