Unlike garage floors in other parts of the country, San Francisco garage flooring is not likely to be subjected to the salt, cinder, slush, and other debris associated with driving in the snow. However, garage flooring in San Francisco still needs to deal with some of the heaviest traffic in the home. Understandably, many garage floors deal with oil stains, tire marks, and any manner of contusions day in and day out for years; predictably, this abuse makes garage flooring (in San Francisco or anywhere else) one of the least attractive facets of the home. There is hope, however! Today, there are a couple options available that can make even the most well used garage floor a far cry from an eyesore.
Enhance San Francisco Garage Flooring with Epoxy
Long popular in commercial settings, epoxy coating is making a name for itself in the residential sector as a durable yet attractive alternative to plain concrete. Available in an enormous amount of appearances, epoxy coating can quickly turn a dull, drab garage floor into something worth showing off to the neighbors. Unlike paint that can easily wear off or chip away, epoxy coating provides a tough surface that can easily handle normal garage traffic.
It?s a good idea to use caution when shopping for epoxy. Some epoxy products are far inferior to others and provide little more protection than paint. The best epoxy installations require several steps of preparation (some of which are a little advanced for beginners), so professional installation is recommended. Another thing worth noting about epoxy coating is that, though it is extremely durable, when left unsealed it will fade quickly in direct sunlight. If you plan on using epoxy for a car port or other area that is exposed to sunlight, a urethane top coat can reduce this effect.
San Francisco Garage Flooring Tile
For Bay Area homeowners in a hurry, another excellent way to perk up the appearance of your garage floor is with tile. Though there is no end to ceramic tile in the bathrooms and kitchens of San Francisco, garage flooring tiles are made of a resilient, rubber material that provides traction as well as looks. Garage floor tile can also dampen sound while it protects the concrete it is installed upon.
For the do-it-yourselfers in San Francisco, garage flooring tile is a material that many homeowners (even less experienced ones) can successfully install. Its floating design makes it easy to put down, and installation is generally as quick as it is simple. Of course, if you want to ensure the best look possible, professional installation is always an option worth looking into.
Sealing Your Garage Flooring
San Francisco homeowners who are not up for the price tag of professionally installed epoxy coating or floor tile (which can easily be a few thousand dollars for a two car garage) might find that simply sealing the concrete they already have is the best option. Though sealing a garage floor won?t do much in the looks department right away, it will protect your floor from the abrasions and stains that are so common to garages. Sealing your concrete is generally a job that is DIY friendly, and the material costs are low (especially when compared to a professionally installed garage floor with all the bells and whistles). While sealed concrete is certainly not the most attractive garage flooring option, for some situations it is easily the most practical.
