Whether you already have a patio that you wish to improve or you?re looking to build one from scratch, your patio design is crucial to both how well it holds up and the ways it can be used and enjoyed. Proper patio design must take into account the area and climate where you live in order to be its best. If planned well, your patio will be usable for a good portion of each year and will last a lifetime, too.
Custom Patio Design
The first step in patio design is making a list of all the things you want to get out of it. Will it be a place used solely for relaxing outdoors, or will it be more of a workspace for projects that would be too messy to do inside? Do you want it to hold a hot tub? Will it be used all year round or just when the weather is nice?
Once you have the answers to these questions and have a good idea of how your patio will be used, you can begin your research. Find out what materials best suit your needs and what extras will be necessary to get the full use out of your investment.
Concrete, Wood, and Stone Patio Floors
When it comes to what the floor of your patio will be made of, most homeowners choose one of these. Concrete is relatively cheap and extremely durable. It is an excellent choice for patios that will be seeing more sawdust and power tools than it will suntan lotion and tea parties.
A stone patio is another very durable choice that can be quite attractive, as well. Stone patios are actually stronger than concrete ones in many cases. The aesthetic appeal and practical strength of a stone patio, however, won't come cheap.
Lumber and the outdoors make strange bedfellows. Wood patios and decks can last for quite some time if they are installed properly and well maintained. They look good and function well, but will require significantly more care and attention over the years than will stone or concrete. With decks, the option is rarely present to build with concrete or stone, but since these materials are generally good for patio use, wood is a much less popular choice.
Patio Fireplaces, Fans, and Roofing
These are three of the most common additions to a patio for good reason. A patio with a roof can be used in many conditions and is, therefore, a good way to get the most from your money. Patio roofs should be stationary and solid in places where heavy or frequent precipitation is common. Less harsh environments may do well, however, with a retractable fabric awning.
A patio fireplace can make a long cold winter a bit more bearable and can make a warm summer night even more pleasurable. Sitting near a patio fireplace is a perfect getaway from a stressful day, and for those in cooler environments, it can make the outdoors more livable year round. It is important, however, to make sure that your patio is properly ventilated and that the main house is sealed off from incoming smoke.
A tall glass of lemonade and a patio fan can be a life saver in the right situation. It is important to choose a fan that is recommended for outdoor use. Those meant to be used indoors can have serious warping and function issues: A patio fan that doesn't work doesn't do anyone any good.
