A portable generator is a very useful tool for those on the go. Let's face it, as a society we've become pretty dependent on electricity and its various uses. Having a power generator means that we can have access to electricity whenever, and wherever its necessary.

Portable Generator Types
Portable generators are very versatile and have a wide range of uses. Whether you want to spruce up your campsite, liven up your tailgating, or simply get some work done, there's a portable generator designed for your needs.

For most people, price comes first when purchasing a power generator. The cost will depend on a few factors: wattage, size, and type. Less expensive "standard" generators use more fuel and create more noise than the more complex "inverter" generators. Standard generators produce a set amount of energy and burn a constant amount of fuel at all times. This means that no matter the kind or amount of devices that are plugged in, energy output and fuel consumption remain the same. Inverter generators use a more advanced technology that varies energy output and fuel consumption depending on the type and number of devices that are being used.

Small standard power generators are available starting between $300 and $500. They generally produce between 1000- 2000 watts and are very portable. These will be able to run one, maybe two, electrical devices at a time for 5-6 hours. A small inverter generator of the same wattage and device capacity will run a couple $100 more. Small portable generators are perfect for running a toaster or coffee maker on a camping trip, or a small TV at a tailgate party.

Larger portable generators are used more for powering lights or tools for work sites. They will produce over 2000 watts and easily power multiple devices. These larger versions are meant to run for the length of a workday or more. Most will run over $1000, though some can be found for a little less.

Power Generator Etiquette
Many people purchase a power generator to bring into the wilderness; that's pretty much what the smaller units are made for. If this is how you plan on using yours, make sure to check the decibel level that your machine will operate at before you buy. A generator that is too large or too noisy can scare off wildlife and be off putting for other nature lovers.

A Word of Caution
Power generators are very convenient, but should be used responsibly. Deaths are reported every year from generator misuse; the majority of these deaths are caused by carbon monoxide. Portable generators burn fossil fuels, which produce this deadly gas. When used in an enclosed area, carbon monoxide poisoning is a very real danger. Always use your generator outdoors, where it was designed to be used. Never turn it on indoors, in a garage, or in a shed. Carbon monoxide is odorless, and when contained in an enclosed space, can reach toxic levels within minutes. Remember, while a properly used generator can be a life saver, one used improperly can become the exact opposite.
