Bathroom cabinetry could be one of the most highly overlooked storage areas in the house, which is surprising as it is also one of the most heavily used. Bathroom cabinets have long been too high, too low, too deep, or too shallow, but unlike their kitchen counterparts, bathroom cabinets are often dealt with rather than improved upon. If you're looking to improve the functionality of your home in Pittsburgh, bathroom cabinet remodeling might just be the perfect place to begin.

Benefits of Pittsburgh Bathroom Cabinet Remodeling
Most of us have had the experience of losing something in the bathroom that was already put away in the right spot because of poorly designed cabinetry. Due to a lack of storage space, many of us have been forced to store items elsewhere and which, by all rights, should be in the bathroom. Remodeling or replacing your unsatisfactory bathroom cabinetry will insure that neither of these situations will continue to be commonplace.

Other reasons to remodel stem from poor planning and design. Cabinets are often too high for easy access, or too low to store products that might be harmful for children or pets. Also, by changing the height of bathroom cabinets, Pittsburgh residents with back problems or other health issues can better access the things they need.

One big benefit of remodeling bathroom cabinets is that it is a very rewarding job. In fact, updating a bathroom that is 25 years old or more (a scenario that is quite common to Allegheny County and the surrounding areas) is one of the best ways of adding value to a home. In many cases, the value that is added to your house is greater than the cost of construction. Since Pittsburgh bathrooms aren't particularly large, the job often goes quickly, too.

Options for Bathroom Cabinets in Pittsburgh
If you want to renovate your bathroom cabinetry, you have several options. The first, and the most expensive, is to replace your existing cabinet system with one that is custom built. In this case, you have to pay both for the work done in your home, as well as the work to build the cabinets in a shop. This will assure that you have the most convenient and effective cabinets possible (as they will be designed specifically for your needs). Unfortunately, the price tag for such work is far less convenient. Building custom cabinets averages around $5,000 nationwide (not including installation), though this figure includes a lot of kitchen work that is generally much more involved. Building custom bathroom cabinets will tend to be less expensive.

You can also purchase ready-made cabinetry and have it installed to your specifications. While you won't have the advantage of getting cabinets designed specifically for your household, if you have a good idea of what you want and where it should go, this option will probably work out well. Having cabinets installed this way generally costs around $6,000.

In some areas of Pittsburgh, bathroom cabinets are old enough that you may not want to have them replaced. In these cases, refinishing and refacing are your main choices. Refinishing classic wood cabinetry can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000, though for the smaller space of a bathroom, the price will tend to be on the lower end of these figures. Refacing (fixing brand new material to the surface of your cabinets) in a kitchen can often end up being pretty expensive; in a bathroom where there will be far fewer exposed surfaces, however, professional refacing will start at around $1,000.
