In Philadelphia, window shutters are not an uncommon sight in the city or in the surrounding areas. With a long history in Pennsylvania, the shutter is still every bit as desirable as it was a few hundred years ago. If you are looking to improve your home's curb appeal or are looking for a window treatment that will bring out the best of your home's interior, shutters are an excellent option, and well worth considering.

Exterior Philadelphia Window Shutters
In the past, outside shutters were generally installed out of necessity. Protecting windows from strong winds and flying debris were their main jobs. In other climates, exterior shutters are still used to protect window glass when a large storm is expected. Today, Philadelphia window shutters are installed on a home's exterior for more aesthetic reasons. In fact, many shutters in southeastern PA are simply fixed to the outside of a house and are never meant to move.

One could reasonably question what the point is of putting up exterior shutters that don't open and close. For many people, the reason is quite similar to why we plant flowers or cut our lawns. A new coat of paint on the outside of a house can certainly brighten things up, but it doesn't add the same kind of accent that shutters can provide. By providing an additional surface for a color that compliments the rest of the house's exterior and lending a classic look to the property, shutters make a statement that, though subtle, will be both noticeable and elegant.

Interior Window Shutters in Philadelphia
Where exterior shutters don't have to open and close to provide an accent for the outside of your home, interior shutters would be nothing but a bother if they didn't move. By installing indoor window shutters, Philadelphia residents will be able to have the light-blocking power of shades or curtains, but with a look that's completely different.

Interior shutters can make a difference in the physical feel of a room, too. When opened, they allow excellent ventilation; when closed, they create a barrier to hinder heat transfer. The insulation provided by interior wooden shutters can make a room more comfortable in the winter by keeping heat indoors from seeping out and blocking drafts from gaps around old windows. They provide the same kind of protection in the summer, only in reverse.

Interior shutters can provide privacy for those inside the house (exterior shutters, when fully functional, can also perform this task, but are far less convenient). Once again, however, it's the look that sets shutters apart from other window coverings. The solid wood construction of interior shutters is every bit as functional at blocking light as a curtain or shade, but the classic good looks of a set of shutters is something that is difficult to match.

Pricing Philadelphia Window Shutters
To install exterior window shutters, Philadelphians can expect the bill to be between $800 and $1,200. Interior shutters cost a bit more and have an average installation cost of a little over $2,000. Security shutters, which are rarely seen on Philadelphia residences, though employed in commercial settings, come in at an average price of just under $3,000 nationwide.
