The condition of your lawn makes a big impression on the appearance of your house as a whole. In Philadelphia, lawn care is a job that, if done well, can enhance the look of your property, and actually raise its value, as well. Certainly, the amount of space you have to work with will help determine whether you do the work yourself, hire a professional service, or just pay the kid down the street to mow the grass every once in a while. For those who've got a yard that's big enough to warrant some serious care, hiring a lawn service might be the difference between breaking your back just to keep it managed (in your spare time, no less), and having a lawn that is nice to look at and a great place to hang out on your day off.

Hiring a Lawn Service in Philadelphia
For those who live in or near downtown Philadelphia, lawn maintenance is probably not a huge concern. Once you get a little out of town, however, the lawns get larger quickly. The bigger the yard, the more benefit there is in hiring someone to help with your lawn service. Philadelphia is chock full of people who will do the work, but finding the right one for your needs might be a bit tricky as there are so many to choose from.

Most people want a lawn service that will do some of the work, but leave other tasks to the homeowner. Many companies offer package deals, which are fine if you need everything in the package, but aren't that great if you only want a portion of these services. When looking for the perfect company, ask about altering packages to suit your needs, or the difference in price you'll get by purchasing services a la carte. If they are willing to accommodate you at a reasonable price, you probably have a winner.

It is also a good idea to use a company that regularly works in your area. You might even want to ask around to see if any of your neighbors have anyone they would recommend. A Philadelphia lawn care company that has put in the work it takes to build a good reputation with its customers is probably going to do a good job at a reasonable price.

Basic Philadelphia Lawn Maintenance
Lawn service in Philadelphia can consist of many things. Southeastern PA yards need to be mowed regularly for the better part of the year, but lawn service doesn't stop there. Most companies also offer fertilizing, hedge trimming, insect and weed control, and watering. Many will also test your soil and give you sound advice on what varieties of plants and grass will grow best naturally, as well as what needs to be done to the soil to grow specific plants.

One Time or Vacation Service
Perhaps you have a green thumb of your own and don't generally need too much help to keep your lawn looking beautiful. If you go out of town for a bit, you might not want to leave your hard work in the hands of anyone but a professional. Most companies offer one time lawn service just for this situation. Leaving a well kept lawn unattended for any significant period of time can make a marked difference in its appearance. By hiring a service for a few weeks, you'll be able to come home to a yard that is just as good-looking as you left it. You may even want to hire this kind of one time service at the beginning of the spring to give your property a push in the right direction.

Philadelphia Lawn Service Prices
Prices vary greatly depending on the type of work you want done and the company you go with. For weekly lawn service, Philadelphians should expect the price to be less per visit than monthly service (but more overall, obviously, for the whole season). Giving your lawn a jump-start in early spring often runs around $300 or $400, and a bill of around $300 is common for maintaining a lawn over a vacation.
