Laundry rooms are among the greatest trends in home remodeling. They may not have the same pizazz as the kitchen or bathroom, but given the tediousness of chores, a well-designed laundry room can be every bit as important to the quality of your time at home. Old laundry areas are often located in cold, damp basements. Even laundry rooms that have escaped the fate of being relegated to the dregs of the home are too often neglected. Whether you're building a new laundry space or simply enhancing the laundry room décor of your old area, chances are there's something to be done to improve laundering experience.

Laundry Room Décor and Remodeling
Before you choose how to create your laundry room décor, you might first consider any major renovations to your laundry area. If you have the space, moving your laundry room to the same floor as the bedrooms will probably add more convenience than any minor touches you can do to the room itself. Alternately, you may be able to add a laundry chute to approximate the same kind of luxury. If you can't move your laundry room and your current one is located in the basement, a basement renovation may be in order. Waterproofing your basement will remove the dank air and allow you to install carpet in your laundry room. Music and aromatherapy will help anything, but a basement renovation may be the only way to create a significant difference in your laundry experience.

Laundry Room Lighting
The value of good lighting is generally underestimated by homeowners during remodeling. Nowhere is this truer than in the laundry room. Being able to see your laundry makes it easier to match socks, fold your laundry, and simply be able to effortlessly see what you're doing. Too many old laundry areas make due with a single, old fluorescent lighting fixture. Worse yet, your fluorescent lighting may have a ballast that has fallen into disrepair, causing the light to flicker. Rather than repair this lighting, you should think about replacing the lighting altogether. You'd be surprised by the number of homeowner who find their new lighting was the most important part of their laundry room remodel.

Laundry Room Decorating
Like any other area in your home, the best laundry room decorating attempts to accommodate the function of the room as it enhances its look. Decorative dishes will allow you to collect change and other pocket items you find while doing your laundry. A small trash can will allow you to easily dispose of dryer lint. Quality cabinets, drawers, bins, and (if you don't have carpet) a good-sized rug are all great additions to your laundry room.

Ideally, you'll also have room for some purely ornamental items, such as wall art, plants, and warmly painted walls. At the same time, laundry room decorating can only only be taken so far. You might find a pleasing pattern for your ironing board cover, but it's unlikely to dazzle the aesthetic eye. Folding tables, clothes lines, and laundry baskets will probably also stay in your laundry room without being any kind of decorative centerpiece. Not that these items will be incredible eyesores, but trying too hard to beautify your laundry room may make it look awkward. The point of laundry room decorating is to create a personalized, stress-free environment. Leave your kitchen, bathroom, and living rooms to dazzle your house guests. Chances are, if you're giving the full tour, your guests will be just as impressed with a superbly functional laundry room as they will any overblown decorating scheme.
