Let's face it, or at least try to understand it better, the kitchen is where we entertain. Who knows what happened, but what is clear is that try as you might to corral your guests into the formal living room or dining room, they want to be in the kitchen. Maybe this is because all the food and drinks are here. Maybe because they want to help out. It's hard to say, but what we must learn is that the basics of the kitchen have changed.

Entertaining in the Kitchen
It is requisite now to have nice materials in the kitchen: granite countertops, maple cabinets, stainless steel appliances. Everyone used to get by with anything that would work, but now that people entertain in the kitchen, the materials need to be a little nicer than the old linoleum floors and painted wood cabinets.

This is not that big of a deal because these newer, nicer products like granite and hickory cabinets also last longer than the old standbys. So the upgrade is not just for style.

Kitchens Sell the House
Even if you aren't planning on moving or selling, the majority of the "perceived value" of a house is placed squarely on the shoulders of the kitchen. No more is it a solid foundation, sturdy walls, and a garage. Those days are over. Now, when people look for houses, the kitchen is the first thing they ask about. Many homeowners are unwilling to buy a house if the kitchen is not to their liking, even if the rest of the house is. So when we say that the basics of kitchens have changed, this is what we mean.

Kitchen Countertops
Because people often entertain in the kitchen, long, spacious countertops have become a staple. Coupled with these large counters are kitchen barstools. Because of this extra sitting space in the kitchen, kids do their homework on the kitchen counter, parents pay bills, people play cards. This fact increases the amount of traffic on counters and wears down laminate quicker than back when nobody was in the kitchen except for Mom. Solid surface, rock, tile, and concrete counters have become a near necessity because of the traffic, while also appreciated for their style.

Kitchen Design
With six-burner stoves, range hoods, griddles, solid wood cabinetry, and other amenities, kitchens have become the ultimate gadget room that make cooking and entertaining easier and much more fun. Remember that there are many different kitchen upgrades that you can make to your older home, or to a home that you are thinking about purchasing. If you don't want to remodel your kitchen for yourself, be sure to realize that your buyer will expect that you have an up-to-date kitchen to offer them.
