A popular choice among homeowners, acoustic ceiling installation is a project that improves a room's function, as well as its appearance. Obviously, this kind of ceiling gets its name from the sound deadening qualities it brings to a room, but even if a room doesn't have any noise issues, there are other reasons one might opt for this particular kind of installation.

Acoustic Ceiling Styles
Acoustic ceilings come in two basic styles. A dropped or suspended ceiling is the more common of the two. It generally consists of 2 x 2 foot or 2 x 4 foot tiles dropped into an interlocking metal grid suspended from the structural ceiling. The second option for acoustic ceiling installation is a glued ceiling. Glued ceilings are made up of tiles (usually 1 x 1 foot) that are glued directly onto the structural ceiling.

Both glued and suspended acoustic ceilings offer sound-proofing qualities and can cover up existing damage, but only suspended ceilings will hide any exposed ducts, pipes and wires.

Glued Ceilings
Most glued ceiling tiles are 12 x 12 inches. They don't dramatically alter the dimensions of the room they are installed in, but will make a significant difference in that room's appearance and sound quality. Though most tiles meant for this sort of installation will be either white or off-white, you might be able to find specialty tiles containing patterns or colors (painting these tiles is not always the best option). Though less popular, and in some instances, less practical, a glued ceiling is still a viable option in many situations, especially if head room is a big issue in that particular space.

Suspended Acoustic Ceiling Installation
Suspended ceiling panels usually come in 2 x 2 feet or 2 x 4 feet panels. The larger panel is less expensive and takes less material to put it up. Installation is generally faster, too.

Though many acoustic ceiling installations are all white with little or no texture, there are several variations on the market. Most panels and tiles are anywhere from a half an inch thick to 5/8 of an inch. Designer panels come in a wide array of textures and styles. Not all suspended ceilings have equal sound altering capabilities; manufacturers create sound absorbing panels by adding holes to them (if your acoustic ceiling installation is primarily meant to alter sound quality, painting these panels may not be the best idea). They also make panels with insulation, which consist of a vinyl surface backed with about a half inch of fiberglass. The insulation is not a lot (only about an R-3), but if you have a drafty attic, it'll help.

Some manufacturers also create fire-rated panels that are treated with a fire retardant. The panels themselves are not fireproof, but they should provide you with about 20 minutes of protection.

Suspended acoustic ceiling installation is popular because you can hang them at any height from the structural ceiling, giving you the opportunity to completely recreate the look and feel of a room. Many times just lowering the ceiling will make a room feel cozier. For example, take a look at many bedrooms and living rooms. Often they are smaller spaces, which make them feel more comfortable and intimate. If you have a large cavernous room that you want to make homier, consider dropping the ceiling.
