Swimming Pools & Hot Tubs

So you've decided to finally install that pool you always wanted. Now you just have to dig a hole, fill it with water, and dive in, right? Not so fast. There are still plenty of choices to make, and a bit of forethought will go a long way in making sure you get the most out of your in-ground pool.

Pool Materials
Pools these days can be made from a number of materials. Some of the most popular are:

  • Vinyl: A traditional choice, consisting of reinforced walls with a vinyl liner. Vinyl in-ground pools come in a whole array of designs, patterns, and colors, which will add a personal touch to your pool.
  • Fiberglass: A one-piece shell, these are made in a factory and finished with a gel coat similar to boat finish. Installation time is quicker than many other types, and, with regular maintenance, the finish will stand the test of time.
  • Gunite: The highest quality and most elaborate option, gunite in-ground pools are reinforced with concrete and plaster instead of a liner. A number of add-ons are available, including custom steps, beach entries and waterfalls. These are the most expensive of the pool options out there.

Filtration
The filter keeps dirt and disease-carrying animals out of your pool, a pretty important function overall. There are two main types of filters:

  • Sand filters: In these systems, water is run through high-grade sand, which traps dirt and debris on the way through the filter.
  • DE filters: A DE, or Diatomaceous Earth, filter has plastic grids covered by a plastic type of fabric which is covered by a fine powder. Because the powder is finer than sand, it filters smaller particles.
  • Cartridge filters: This type uses a paper-type cartridge as a filter media. It functions at approximately the same level as a sand filter. Whichever type you use, be sure to go with a quality brand that will last the lifetime of your pool.

Landscaping
The options here are virtually limitless. They can include:

  • Patios: Concrete, brick, tile, wood? there are lots of different ways to go. A good patio can complement the look and feel of your yard, and make your in-ground pool into a backyard oasis.
  • Fences: A fence is required in many areas, in order to keep animals from falling into your pool. If you have children or pets, you should install one right away. From a simple, reliable chain link to something more decorative, be sure that it isn't spaced so wide that anything—or anyone—can get through.

Putting plenty of thought into your in-ground pool now will ensure years of enjoyment in the future.
