As great as many hard surface floors look, there's really nothing like having the soft, forgiving feel of a thick, lush carpet under your feet. Between a long day at work and getting in out of the rain, few things can make you feel at home like kicking off your shoes and lumbering around your home on a well-cushioned carpet.

Choosing a Carpet Fiber for your Houston Carpet Installation
There are two main components to carpet that will affect its overall quality: the fiber and the padding. As far as fibers go, the two big decisions you'll need to make are fiber material and fiber design. Wool and other natural fibers are generally considered top-of-the-line, but are also the most expensive. These fibers are both comfortable and long-lasting.

Synthetic fibers are made from such materials as nylon, olefin, and acrylic. While no fiber is immune to fading from sun exposure, some synthetic fibers must really be treated to shade as much as possible. Synthetic fibers are tougher than natural fibers but also hold dirt longer. Natural fibers pick up dirt but will then shed these dirt-laden fibers. In other words, your natural fibered carpet will eventually be worn down but will continue to look good for much longer.

Carpet fibers are made from loops, which can be left intact in the case of Berber carpet or cut in the case of plush carpet. There are also several variations of these two methods that produce slightly different effects. Tons of opinions abound about which style carpet is superior. You may need to match the loop style with a specific fiber and/or tailor your carpet cleaning and maintenance to get the most out of whichever carpet you choose.

Choosing a Carpet Padding for your Houston Carpet Installation
Strictly speaking, carpet padding isn't necessary for a carpet installation in Houston or anywhere else. Nearly everyone chooses to give their new carpet padding simply because it will dramatically increase your carpet's lifetime. Thicker padding will give your carpet a softer, more luxurious feel, but increased durability comes not as much from the thickness of the padding as the density. A fluffy, thick padding will most likely wear out long before a thinner, denser padding.

Cost of a Houston Carpet Installation
The average Houston carpet installation costs about $1,500. The total cost of your project will depend on the area you want covered and the style and quality of the carpet you choose. It might be tempting to go to a carpet supply store first, but instead of talking to a high-pressure salesperson on a show floor discussing your options with a Houston carpet installation professional will give you truly unbiased advice from someone who's not getting paid by commission. The overall cost of your project isn't going to be appreciably higher, and you'll know exactly what you're getting. As for different flooring options, other than linoleum which simply isn't a viable option for many rooms in your home, even high-end carpet is going to be significantly less expensive than nearly every other material.

Project Length of Houston Carpet Installation
The average carpet installation doesn't take long. While it may take a few days to a week to choose a carpet, get it ordered, delivered, and schedule a time with your Houston carpet installation contractor, the actual installation shouldn't take more than a day. In some rare circumstances, such as carpeting the majority of an already furnished house, it may take a little longer. In fact, moving furniture and other large items before your contractor arrives is one of the only pieces of advice we hear from Houston homeowners. Make sure you and your contractor know who's responsible for what. Most contractors are willing to move furniture for you, but warn them about particularly heavy pieces, and/or ask if there's a discount for the installation if you're willing to move it yourself.
