Gone are the days when home security simply meant putting a chain on the front door. While there are still people who don't use it and places where it might not be required, most modern homeowners view their home security as a top priority. In past generations, a security gate on your front door or a lift gate in your driveway would have been uncommon to say the least. Today, measures such as these are a part of many people's everyday life.

Security gates are, and have been, commonly found on the front doors of commercial properties. The addition of security gates on a residence, though in the past it might have been considered overkill, is gaining popularity. Just like having more than one lock on a door or a sticker that says a home is protected by a security system, a security gate is simply one more obstacle to dissuade a would-be intruder.

The most direct way of entering a house is through a door. Whether they swing or fold, they are all, most importantly, visible. Security gates are a way of projecting to those passing by that this home will not easily be entered.

Entry door security gates are generally made of steel; this makes them affordable as well as tough. Compared to other security systems, door gates are very cost effective. There are two basic styles: folding and swinging. Swinging gates operate much like a door, but the construction is much heavier. They can be a simple set of bars with hinges on one side and a lock on the other, or they can look much like a door. Folding gates, long seen on storefronts, come in smaller sizes for residential spaces. When not in use, they fold to the side of the entrance so they are not in the way.

What a door gate does for the entrance to a house, a driveway gate does for the entrance to the property in its entirety. For those who don't have a garage, a driveway gate can certainly protect your automobile, as well. Even if the gate is short enough to be climbed over, getting the car out of the driveway would be quite difficult without damaging the car. This is a big deterrent for someone who would try and steal a vehicle.

Though there are a few different types of driveway gates, lift gates are very popular in urban areas. Lift gates are, in many cases, more expensive to install than swinging or sliding gates, but are a good choice when space is an issue. The extra space they take up is in the air above the driveway as opposed to on the side like sliding gates. Swinging driveway gates need lots of room to open and close, which might not be an option in an urban area.

Protecting family and property has been a concern of every homeowner for ages and ages. In the present time, it's hard to say how much security is too much, and what is too little. "Better safe than sorry", has been an acceptable motto for a long time, but with all the options available, it would certainly be easy to go overboard. The kinds and volume of home security your family has should depend on who you are as a unit. It is of course, better to be safe. It is also better to be happy and comfortable.
