While the Windy City certainly has its fair share of history, modern interests and contemporary trends in technology, building, and lifestyle are also important to residents of Chicago. Concrete countertops are a newer option for kitchen and bathroom remodels that provide an interesting and unique alternative to more traditional counter materials. If you're looking for a counter that is versatile, customizable, and attractive for your house or condo in Chicago, concrete counters are likely to fit the bill.

Characteristics of Chicago Concrete Countertops
When most people think of concrete, the picture that comes to mind is probably something similar to the dull, gray material used in commercial and industrial settings. Far from the bland appearance of sidewalks and bridges, concrete counters are some of the most beautiful fixtures available in the modern market. Once it is ground, polished, stained, and adorned, you'll be hard pressed to compare the muted appearance of industrial concrete to a finished concrete countertop. Chicago homes, whether classic or ultra modern, are sure to find just the look they need with this incredibly adaptable material.

Concrete counters will perform in much the same manner as a natural stone counter when it comes to durability and maintenance, but in some ways are actually preferable to materials like granite, quartz, or marble. Since concrete counters are stained by your contractor instead of by the elements, there are many more options when it comes to color than can be expected with natural stone. Concrete can also be stamped with designs and patterns; you can even add elements to the concrete mix (like colored glass or metal) to create an effect that no natural stone can match. Additionally, concrete counters can be poured on-site, which eliminates the need for the seams that accompany quarried stone installations.

Chicago Concrete Counter Contractors
Unlike natural stone and other counter materials, Chicago concrete countertops will probably need to be commissioned rather than picked out. Most of these pieces are hand crafted by individual artisans on an individual basis. Though it might be a bit more difficult to find a place to purchase concrete countertops in Chicago than it will be to find a granite or quartz dealer, you'll have the benefit of being able to create your counter side-by-side with your contractor to your exact specifications.

When looking for a Chicago concrete counter craftsperson, you'll most likely be dealing with individuals or very small companies. Make sure to talk to several different contractors to get the best price, and don't be afraid to ask to see portfolios of their previous work. You will probably be able to get references of previous customers; you may even be able to check out some actual counters in person at previous clients' homes!

Prices of Chicago Concrete Counters
Homeowners looking for an inexpensive counter option will be disappointed when checking out the prices of concrete countertops. Chicago prices for these fixtures can be as much (or in some cases, even more) than the cost of natural stone installations. While costs will certainly vary depending on the size of the installation and any special specifications you might have, you can expect a concrete counter (much like a similarly sized slab stone counter) to run about $2,500 to $4,000, with extremes going as low as $1,500 or as high as $8,000.
