Carpet is one of the most popular flooring materials in the country. It is inexpensive, comfortable, and available in such a wide variety of styles and colors, there's no question why so many Americans choose carpet for their homes. Unfortunately, carpet is not the most durable flooring material in the world. If you have carpet for more than a few years, the chances are high that, at some point, you'll need to call for carpet repair. Chicago residents who have some carpet that's seen better times should definitely consider the options available in carpet repair before opting for carpet replacement or installing a different flooring material.

Common Chicago Carpet Repairs
One of the most common reasons to call for carpet repair in Chicago is loose carpeting. A loose carpet can take many forms; aside from the obvious symptom of carpet sliding where it's not supposed to, buckling and rippling can also occur. To fix this, you carpet simply needs to be re-stretched. Carpet can loosen over time, but in many cases, this problem is caused by poor installation. If your carpet becomes loose only a few weeks after the installation, you should be able to get the company that did the work to fix it for free.

The Windy City can really dish out some rough winter weather; no matter what kind of flooring you have, there's a good possibility that it will have a certain amount of difficulty in Chicago. Carpet repair is often necessary to remove the very worst stains caused by tracked in dirt and grime. In these severe cases, sections of the carpet may have to be removed and a new patch sewn in to completely remove the stain. You might, however, consider installing a different floor material right at the entrance of your home to prevent these kinds of stains (tile is a good choice), while keeping the look and feel of carpet in the rest of the house.

Shedding and snags are two other common Chicago carpet repair requests. If your carpet has just been installed, you can expect a certain amount of shedding. Basically, just keep vacuuming regularly and the shedding should stop. If shedding occurs long after the carpet was initially put in, there's probably not much you or your repairperson can do about it. Snags and runs in your carpet can ruin the look of a room. In most cases, these problems can be repaired quickly and inexpensively. Whatever you do, however, don't pull on any offending carpet fiber, as this will only make the problem worse. In fact, it is best to take a pair of scissors and cut the loose fiber off so it doesn't get pulled on accidentally.

Chicago Carpet Repair and Replacement Costs
In the metro area, carpet replacement, though far less expensive than replacing most other flooring materials, is not a cheap process and will usually run you a few thousand dollars. Chicago carpet repair is less expensive (generally a few hundred dollars). If your carpet is more than 15 years old, however, it is likely that it will need to be replaced sooner rather than later, no matter how good your repairperson is.

A well cared for carpet can last for decades, even if it is in an area where foot traffic is common. A poorly maintained carpet might only last five or six years, however, before it becomes an eyesore. Your best bet for getting the longest life and best appearance out of your carpet is to vacuum it at least once a week and have it professionally cleaned (usually about $200 or $300) at least once a year.
