In the same way that a deck is one of the most desirable additions to a house, a deck awning is one of the best additions to a deck. Deck awnings make sitting outdoors a much more comfortable experience, and can even extend the amount of time you spend outdoors by allowing you to enjoy your deck during those splendid summer showers.

Canopy Awnings
A fabric canopy awning is generally the best choice for a residence. Canopy awnings are available in both retractable and stationary designs, but, for a deck, retractable is usually more practical. Fabric awnings are less expensive than metal awnings, which is very desirable if you want enough shade on your deck to cover many people (which most of us would). They provide a much cooler temperature to relax in, and can easily provide shelter during a light rain storm.

Retractable canopy awnings are easy to maintain. Depending on the type of fabric, some are guaranteed to not fade more than one percent over a five-year period. They can even be printed with whatever you like, making the awning a personal expression as well as a practical tool. Fabric deck awnings are not designed for use in any sort of extreme condition. Heavy wind or rain usually calls for the awning to be retracted so that it will not be damaged.

Metal Deck Awnings
A metal awning is a very durable, though more expensive choice. Retractable models are certainly available, but are even more expensive. A deck is often a rather large space, and any metal awning that is going to cover a significant portion of it will most likely have to be custom made. The cost of this operation is why you are much more likely to see a metal awning over doors, windows, or covering patios.

Despite their lack of use on actual decks, a smaller area like a porch or patio can truly benefit from the addition of a metal awning. Their best characteristic is their resistance to the elements. They are strong enough to withstand piled up snow; some are even rated for hurricane strength winds. An awning made of metal will also block more heat than would a fabric one.

Deck Awning Installation
How your awning is installed will depend on whom you purchase it from. Certainly, there are awnings available at home improvement centers that are DIY friendly, and will come with easy to follow step-by-step instructions.

When buying a higher end awning, however, professional installation might be a better idea. The warranty that comes with some awnings may be voided if a certified contractor does not install them. In a few cases, the warranty could become void if the awning is put up by anyone other than the installers that company provides. Though this might be a bit of a nuisance for some people, the upside to these policies is that they guarantee the absolute best possible installation and performance.
