As friendly, open, and trusting as Austinites are, fences are often about a lot more than keeping people away from your home. They can give pets a place to roam, provide privacy for intimate gatherings in your yard, and simply look great as part of your outdoor landscaping. If you're considering a new wood fence or fencing repair, here's some of the things you should know about wood fences in Austin.

Wood Fencing and Austin Neighbors
One of the ways to defray some of the extra cost of wood fencing is by talking to your neighbors and getting them to pitch in for some of the cost. Convince them that a wood fence would look better for their own backyard and ask them if they'll pay for half of the fence that borders their property. You may have as many as three neighbors to talk to, and hopefully, by the time it's all said and done, you'll have enough help to make it work.

Whether or not, you plan to ask your neighbors to help out with money, it's critical that you let them know about the project. Between property lines, local ordinances, and just plain being a good neighbor, you'll want to make sure the project goes off without a hitch. Even if your neighbor says, sure go for it, you'll still want to check the property line. A couple years down the road, you may have a different neighbor and he or she may not be so accommodating. If the fence isn't on your property, you'll have little recourse to keep it from being torn down.

General Cost of Austin Wood Fence Installations
Look around and you'll find a lot of different information on the cost of different fencing materials. Even on our site, you can probably find multiple articles claiming that wood fencing is cheaper in one place and aluminum fencing is cheaper in another. The truth is wood fencing is somewhat cheaper (about 20%) than aluminum or vinyl fencing, but wood doesn't last as long and requires more diligent and more repair costs. This means wood fences are slightly cheaper to install and slightly more expensive in the long run. More than cost, the real advantage of wood fencing is that most people think it looks better. On the other hand, the big disadvantage is that it may attract pests and suffer from rot.

Exact Cost and Project Length of Wood Fences in Austin
While this is good to know, once you've decided to build a wood fence, you'll need to know about the nuts and bolts of your fencing project. Our numbers show that the national average for a wood fence is around $2,800, but they also show Austin wood fencing projects rarely hit this number. We regularly see projects for $300, $400, $500. These Austin wood fences are probably small decorative installations. We also see wood fence projects run as high as $6,000. Depending on the size of your yard and the quality and species of the wood your select, expect your project to be somewhere in this range.

Installing a wood fence, even around a larger yard shouldn't take more than a couple days. Smaller projects can be completed in one day. This doesn't mean you're going to have a brand new fence the day after you decide to install one, though. Spending your time talking to and choosing your Austin fencing contractor and then getting on the same page with wood fencing options, aesthetic expectations, and scheduling time for the contractor to come to your home to do the work, may take two weeks or more in and of itself. You're unlikely to get the best wood fencing installation without this process.
